Using d10 to smooth dice minimum and maximum totals - would it work?

Recommended Posts

I have the D6 Fantasy rules and they look interesting, but the pip system does not quite work for me due to the decrease in the minimum values that you can roll and the jump in the maximum value between 5 and 6 pips.

3 pips ... 1d6+0 .. Min: 1, Max 6

4 pips ... 1d6+1 .. Min: 2, Max 7

5 pips ... 1d6+2 .. Min: 3, Max 8

6 pips ... 2d6+0 .. Min: 2, Max 12

So having 6 pips means that you can roll a total 1 less that 5 pips, but can potentially roll 4 more.

What I am thinking of doing is changing the system from d6 to d10 (which I realise also means changing some other rules) so that...

.5 pips ... 1d10 ........ Min 1, Max 10

.6 pips ... 1d10 + d2 ... Min 2, Max 12

.7 pips ... 1d10 + d4 ... Min 2, Max 14

.8 pips ... 1d10 + d6 ... Min 2, Max 16

.9 pips ... 1d10 + d8 ... Min 2, Max 18

10 pips ... 2d10 ........ Min 2, Max 20

11 pips ... 2d10 + d2 ... Min 2, Max 22

etc.

... do you think this would work?

NB: The maximum for 6 pips, 9 pips etc. matches that of 2D, 3D etc.
