Ruko raises a hand to shield his eyes from the sand filled wind.

'Hope this goes down alright, just want this place to be right peaceful just how I like it.' he thinks as this event comes closer to a climax.

Jessup stands in the front of the Mule, atop the crate gripped in the loading forks. "This here box is s'posed to be delivered ta th' Stillman Ranch 'fore Christmas. So we ain't so much like Santy Claus on the looks, but we can keep to a deadline right nicely. You Stillman?"

The Sheriff looks up at Jessup. His right cheek twitched just a bit. "Yeah. Bring it up ta the house. My boys'll help offload it. Expect y'all are hungry. Welcome to join us for supper, 'less there's a pressin' engagement elsewhere."

Junior looks over at Ruko. "Well, conjure least one of us would be 'his boys' so we'd best get up to the house..."

Sheriff Stillman grabs one of the Mule's handholds and plants his feet on a step to hitch a ride over to the house.

(Kagome - another Perception roll, if you please.)

The Mule taxis over to the ranch house. As it slows to a stop, Kagome notices an outbuilding in which a grav vehicle is being serviced. From its lines and paintjob, it's clear that this is a racing vehicle. A small crew is working on it, a welder making a blue-white flare in the gloom and red sparks cascade across the floor.

The Sheriff steps down as the Mule stops, and orders some of his men to assist the crew of the Phoenix in offloading the crate.

"Y'all been travelin' a spell? How long back did ya leave from Ariel?" he asks.

"It has been a while, I'm afraid this crate wasn't enough for us to take the express route out here. However, that looks very interesting over there, a race vehicle?"

"Just like Ben. Probably paid too gorram much just ta get whatever this is time for the holidays."

At the mention of the racer, Sheriff Stillman gives a disgusted sigh. A voice from the shadowed porch of the house behind Kagome says "That she is, ma'am. Fastest one in the system. Gonna win the Derby come day after next."

The young man smiles, stepping out into the heat of the day. "Christmas Eve each year. The Deadwood Derby. Fastest racers from the rim come a callin' to try takin' the prize. Ain't been out o' our family room for goin' on nine years. I'd call it an honor ta escort ya, ma'am."

"Very interesting. I shall be glad to accept your offer on one condition. You cannot both ask me out and call me ma'am in the same sentence, I'm neither that old nor in a position of authority over you. My name is Kagome"

"Conjure that's fair enough, m- Kagome. Figure we're a mite formal out here, no disrespect meant - fact is the opposite were what I was intent upon."

The young man extends his hand. "Name o' Redemption Stillman, Junior. Folks here just call me Little Red, though; obliged if you'd do likewise. Sheriff there's my uncle."

Emmett listens to the introductions and walks over to Sheriff Stillman. "Emmett Stapp's the name. Pleased ta meet ya, Sheriff." He tips his hat. "Ah, youngens an' reckless speed. Go tagether like... well, yougens an' hormones."

Ruko was glad that these new people weren't hostile, he didn't fancy gunfights. Some other hands went to unload the Mule, apparently he wasn't needed for the task. With the heat being what it was he was tempted to go inside, but then noticed that some introductions were being given.

He trekked on over to the Mule during the exchange of pleasantries between Kagome and Junior. Before he could say anything another person, Emmett, swiftly entered the scene introducing himself.

With Ruko's uneasiness gone his sense of business starts taking over, "Well, it seems like I'm late for the meeting of new friends. I'm Ruko Yumide and it's a pleasure to meet you. I run the local tailor, mostly trade and custom made with the occasional import. I would be glad to render my services at a discount during your stay dirt side." ending in a slight bow.

"Not too much to keep 'em occupied out here. Better they keep it on the track an' not on the main street over Purdy Township. Justice Stillman. Good to know ya, Stapp."

One of the ship's crew dusts his hands off after moving the crate from the loading forks. "Pleasure may be mine, Ruko-san. Name's Jessup. Did I hear ya say you was a tailor? Maybe you can fix up a coat o' mine. Got a little shredded up in this accident a while back. My very favorite coat. Figure I could buy a new one, but this coat's got a sentimental fixin' on my heart."

As Jessup finishes, Ruko notices Junior stops watching Little Red and the woman and shoots a concerned look at the Sheriff. The Sheriff clearly sees his son's look, but his haggard face betrays nothing.

Kagome dismounts the mule and shakes his hand, "A pleasure to meet you Little Red"

Little Red shakes Kagome's hand with a firm grip. He looks over at the racer. "C'mon, I'll take you over ta the hangar, you can see 'er close up. If you'll permit me..."

Ruko smiles "I'd be glad to have you as a customer Jessup-sama, I understand the weight of an object on a persons heart. I'll get that coat fixed in record time as soon as I get my hands on it."

"I reckon you folks'll enjoy this little gift. Weren't there a message along with th' crate, Jessup? This 'ere heat is makin' my brainpan a mite fuzzy an' I cain't recall." Emmett scratches his head and stares up at the oppressive sun.

Junior looks a little surprised, then calls out "Pa, they been in the Black fer who knows how long, gotta seem even hotter than what it is. Maybe we oughta get inside, give 'em somethin' to drink?"

Sheriff Stillman is still regarding Emmett with a stony glare. "Yeah. Get 'em inside."

Inside the ranch house it is dim and cool. Fans agitate the air, making a gentle breeze. Sheriff Stillman enters and makes his way through the sunken living room. "Woman! Company's here, brung us somethin' from Ben! Best fetch 'em some cool drinks!"

A woman emerges from an adjoining room. Her hair is a shock of gray, and her face weathered and stern, but even through all that it is clear that she was a beautiful young woman once. Now perhaps "handsome woman" would be the descriptor.

"Gorramit, Justice! You said they wasn't like to stay - an' I ain't your ruttin' slave!" She stops, seeing the guests entering the house. "No offense, folks, an' pardon my colorful speak..."

Sheriff Stillman turns away to address his visitors, and his face wears an expression that is easily categorized as uncharacteristically soft, although the crew of the Phoenix has known the man only a few minutes. There's clearly a store of love between these two, that displays itself in peculiar ways...

"Take a seat o'er there. Have somethin' out ta wet your throats in a bit."

Still smiling, he heads back through the door his wife had exited through a moment before.

((Junior is still outside supervising the ranch hands with the crate. Little Red and Kagome are checking out the red racer in the garage. Any PCs can now chat among themselves without any of the Stillman family overhearing...))
