Unformatted Text Version

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I have the PDFs. Is there a way to either break the books down to text only or are there unformatted text versions out there floating about? (Aside from copy pasting the PDFs into notepad and trying to pull the paragraphs back together...)

Why not just use the built-in capabilities of Adobe Reader.

Open PDF

File->Save as Text

It's not quite that simple. The way the PDF renders text, sidebars do not appear in the right place. Depending on how the PDF was coded, the paragraphs do not 'stay together'.

They won't stay together if you select all and paste to notepad. either way you're looking at work to reflow it. Or learn a bit of perl and use a PDF module off cpan and programatically reflow the document.

Using the method you proscribed, exporting as text from within the PDF, it took the better part of two weeks to format everything correctly. This was d6 fantasy.

Ignoring graphics, there's still the manner in which sidebars were exported. Some of them exported with no extra characters in the middle of a paragraph. No perl script can pick that up. Without the source document, it has to be done by hand.

That was D6 Fantasy. Fantasy Creatures, was not really as straightforward. D6 Fantasy exported in a way that paragraphs were marked by two consecutive line breaks. Fantasy Creatures did not. The output was a mass of text and line breaks all running together. I could awk that a line that was less that 20 characters long was a creature name, but that was about it.

If you have time to learn cpan, I'm sure we'd all be grateful. There must be a better way to go about it.
