  1. Hey everyone, I just posted a link on my Astral Empires game blog relating to some of the other OpenD6 projects we're finishing up. Two of these games are complete, more or less, and the others just need the background/character descriptions, etc. finished before they'll be done too. Hey there, A month or two ago we published our first set of OpenD6 materials for Astral Empires: http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=91486 Now that we're finishing on our Lightspeed RPG Conversion for OpenD6 I had a couple of questions: We are wanting to make a couple of simple changes to the rules in order to make the Lightspeed conversion more like 1st Edition Star Wars (which was Lightspeed's original inspiration-it's a long story... ) Anyway, what are the simplest ways to do that? I've read some of the threads about "What is different between the original WEG Star Wars RPG and D6 Space" but was wondering what specific tweaks are necessary to recreate the basic "feel" of 1st Edition? At this point we're throwing out the Wild Die, trying to make things more "cinematic" like that first WEG version, but what else do you think would need to be altered in current OpenD6? BTW.... If you're not familiar with Lightspeed you're in for a treat. Imagine a sci-fi setting where basically all the themes of popular cinematic science fiction are thrust together in a giant homage to the genre. In answer to this thread's question: We have already published the first three Astral Empires OpenD6 books (available here as a bundle: http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=91486&filters=0_0_0_10020 ) and now that I just sent off the files for the Lightspeed conversion for Mongoose Traveller I'm planning to finish the Lightspeed OpenD6 book. Also, we're done with an epic fantasy game powered by OpenD6 (entitled "Terra Generis") with sort of a LOTR meets The Wheel of Time meets Sword of Shannara feel so that should be published soon. Also, the skirmish game Astral Empires: Alpha Marines is written but just needs final editing (it uses the OGL version of the old WEG Star Wars skirmish rules). Lastly, our nostalgia superhero game Megaheroes of the Roaring 80s is based on OpenD6 superhero and adventure elements, along with our zombie western Sundown: Tales of the Zombie West. So, yeah, we're trying to give OpenD6 a good workout!
  5. To be completely honest it was a design goal to keep the core Astral Empires rules very close to D6 Space so that people would have the option to buy just the individual sourcebooks. The idea being that each book will cover a specific timeframe of the Astral Empires universe (02100 AD, 02200 AD, etc. up to 50,000 AD) and replicate the different feels of various types/sub-genres of popular and obscure science fiction. Many elements of the first three products (Core Rules, GM book, Technology Guide) are drawn right out of D6 Space with something of an Astral Empires universe "overlay". That said, we'd of course love to have you pick up any and all books but although there are some background-universe specific components in each product, you should be able to use the various upcoming sourcebooks with D6 Space (although it won't work as well as with the official rules). Any sourcebook which alters basic OpenD6 rules (such as the Retro6 rules in the 10,000 AD sourcebook) will include all applicable rules in that specific product. We're also planning to release print versions as well, and I'll post about that when it's up and running. Thanks! Kevin

It took some time due to the aftermath of the tsunami (my other main project is in disaster readiness/preparedness) but it looks like the Astral Empires D6 RPG is just about ready for sale at the main RPG download sites. There are three books in total, the Core Rules, the Galaxy Master's Guide and the Technology Guide. The core rulebook should be available by tomorrow (so no link yet). I believe there is/will be a discount for buying them bundled. Following shortly (probably beginning of June) will be two of the settings sourcebooks including the one for Lightspeed. There is also a ship book for the Venture-T transport with D6 stats that should be coming out really soon as well. You will notice that the core rules try to keep everything very close to D6 Space but when the 10,000 AD era sourcebook comes out it will have rules for replicating the "feel" of the earlier SWRPG 1st and 2nd Edition games of the 80s and 90s.   7. I'm getting close to finishing an Astral Empires version of the Miniatures Battles rules. It will work with either minis or the counters that will come with it and will be focused on skirmish battles between the Gladitorial Axis and the Unified Fleet Xenolegions, but we plan to also do some army books that will introduce other factions for players to use. As I said, each book will come with counters in the back you can use along with recommendations for minis makers who produce products that would work well with it. Should be a lot of fun! (At least, I'm having fun adapting the material into an Astral Empires book). And it's really cool to be able to "port" your PCs into the game as well. Kevin astralempiresgame.blogspot.com
  8. I just uploaded the files for publishing Astral Empires: The Roleplaying Game. Three books make up the game, all built upon the OpenD6 rules with some tweaks here and there to fit the Astral Empires universe. The first book is the Core Rules composed of all the character creation material and basic aspects of the game, the second is a GM's guide designed for use both with Astral Empires and usable with other sci-fi games, and lastly is a technology guide called "Interstellar Arsenal" with the equipment, starship design rules, etc. We tried to keep this core set of products close to the baseline OpenD6 rules with as minimal changes as necessary with the idea of introducing changes/alterations in the sourcebooks (for example the Astral Empires: Great Galactic Wars sourcebook will introduce the Retro6 system that returns things back to the old SW RPG era and should allow those older out-of-print products to be backwards compatible). Our Lightspeed D6 sourcebook will also use the Retro6 rules along with a couple of other tweaks to better capture the feel of the setting. Anyway, I was just excited to have completed the manuscripts (the Core rules are 260 pages, the GM guide is 99 pages, and the technology book is 94 pages) and thought I'd share. If so, who do I credit for the work of putting it together (along with the two original designers Stephen Crane and Paul Murphy)? I'm going to use this as the basis for one or two Astral Empires sourcebooks (Astral Empires: Xenolegions and possibly Astral Empires: Alpha Marines) and I want to provide proper credit for the person who put this together.   10. Thanks for the responses. The conversion of the miniatures game is exactly what I was looking for. Something that connects with the RPG but allows for additional gaming elements to be included. I'd like to also do a starfighter game extension, but wasn't sure about "Star Warriors", so thanks for the clarification. I suppose I could ask Eric if it'd be okay to do a generic version and make it available for OpenD6. Perhaps I'll approach him about it once I get a couple of these current projects published. The people here in this forum have already been immensely helpful to me in finishing the design work on the Astral Empires OpenD6 RPG, and I wanted to start by saying "thank you" to all of you (especially to Lee Torres and Prime Evil). I am extremely appreciative of this forum. Anyway, I had a couple of questions that came up as I was working on Astral Empires "stuff" tonight and was wondering if some of you kind folks could help me on a few more things. #1. I'm working out a system I'm calling "Retro6" for the first Astral Empires sourcebook ("Great Galactic Wars") which basically rolls things back to the Star Wars RPG era of the D6 system. Obviously I can't use any of the Lucasfilm IP, but what about game mechanics of that era? Are they covered by the OGL? #2. Could I re-write some of the rules and game advice elements from those classic D6 books into my own words and use them in my sourcebooks? My universe does not work exactly like that of Star Wars, so there would be major differences, but as I try to capture the basic "feel" of that era of D6 gaming I'm wondering what WEG material falls under the OGL, or if it is just restricted to the D6 Space, Adventure, Fantasy and related line products? #3. What about some of the add-on systems like the mass combat "Star Wars Miniatures Battles" and the starfighter game? Could generic/repurposed versions of those games be created? The reason I ask is I'm trying to "recreate" sort of that classic era in D6 gaming built around a new but expansive sci-fi universe, but I want to make sure I'm doing things "by the book" (in this case OGL) legally and ethically. I had developed this game for Mongoose Traveller, but then remembered reading in this forum quite a while back and nostalgia caused me to switch gears and go OpenD6.   13. Thanks for the followup responses. I should have clarified that this was not the final workup, but I wanted to provide a basic "look and feel" for feedback. I'll make the tweaks you guys suggest and make sure it is geared towards the current state of the game. But as far as the "feel" does it seem about right? I know it's geared towards the sci-fi end of things, since that's what we're doing, but I suppose the images could be swapped out for anything you guys might be working on. Thanks, Kevin PS.   15. Oh, and yes we are linking the RPG level of play with the tactical starship combat level of play. But that interface won't be published with the initial books. It will be more focused on a single ship level of granularity, unless PCs are in a position to influence larger fleet battles. We also have a strategic and 4x level of play within the Astral Empires universe being created. But all do relate to the RPG if players so choose. One more quick note... I actually think that Lightspeed will be our most popular initial offering as I've read for years people saying "Man I wish this system was D6" at places like RPGnet. It's such a fun game setting drawing on, well, pretty much every piece of cinematic sci-fi out there, and it perfectly integrates into the Astral Empires universe (which kind of does the same thing but in a less obvious fashion). It is going to be structured, most likely, along the lines of the Retro D6 with more of the SW RPG feel because, well, it fits.
  16. Hey Prime Evil, Thank you for the information you shared. I would not have thought of submitting it to the guy at Grognardia, but that is a fantastic idea. We're definitely going for an "old school" feel, trying to get back to the heyday of Star Wars D6, Star Frontiers, etc. At one time a huge number of gamers played using the D6 rules for sci-fi and, while I know the lack of a major media property like Star Wars limits the exposure to casual players I'm hoping that trying to get back to something similar (system/setting) might recapture some gamers. At the very least, it will be a cool attempt at a classic space opera game with some interesting additions from other corners of science fiction. To answer your question, I'm using D6 Space but with the clocked turned back to the Star Wars system in some ways (mostly 2nd Edition, although I know some people prefer 1st). While obviously steering clear of any IP that could create problems I'm going for what I'm calling "familiar but fresh". I've even thought of calling it the "Retro D6" version, since there are some changes from baseline D6 Space, but I'm also trying to make certain it can be played easily by those who use D6 Space. The core rulebooks (actually a 3-in-1 bundle) are drawn mostly from D6 Space, but the first sourcebook will allow for a few tweaks that will make it feel more 2nd Edition SW RPG. I'll tell you what.... If it would be of help to you, send me your email address and I will send you a free copy of what we've created. I'll be finishing up the final editorial touches and graphics work this weekend, depending in part on what I hear back from a couple of freelance artists I'm waiting on, but I'm excited to say that the Open D6 Edition of Astral Empires is complete! The basic set will include three .PDF books consisting of the Core Rules, a Galaxy Master's (GM) Guide, and a Technology book totaling about 420-450 pages along with a two-page overview of how the game works (adapted from an old WEG pamphlet). These are all based on the D6 Space rules along with additional material added in to describe the background of the setting, add numerous unique character and species templates, and other little touches designed to tie the "feel" of the game back to the old Star Wars RPG of yesteryear. Then, the hope is to soon after publish the first sourcebook (The Great Galactic Wars-10,000 AD) and a sourcebook for the Lightspeed RPG (which formerly used the Fuzion rules).   18. Yes, that's basically it. The changes from Open D6 space would merely be renaming things back to the Star Wars RPG standard, with obvious exceptions for things like the force (which would just be metaphysics or psionics) and having a new setting, but one that lent itself to "porting" the older material back in. Thanks for the feedback. I'll take a look at some of the stuff for MiniSix and see if anyone else is trying what we're wanting to do. As far as the Christian Conkle material, we're also working on doing a D6 Version of Lightspeed by him, so I'm quite familiar with his multi-universe crossover (with the serial numbers filed off) stuff and it's a partial inspiration for what we're going for.   20. I'm new here so please forgive me if this has been asked before. But one thing I was thinking about is what if someone did an Open D6 variant that was geared towards recreating the general feel of the old Star Wars setting? Not using any protected IP or anything like that, but merely retitling the stats back to fit the older version of D6 to make it easier to drop material in from older books? That way, anyone who had the original SW materials could immediately use what they wanted to from books on their shelf, moving it into the new Open D6 setting and make use of their old stuff. To clarify... The idea would be to use the old system (with IP scrubbed) as a way to try to draw back gamers who specifically liked the SW version back in the day and to try to replicate a similar universe feel while making it easy to use the old books. If you didn't step on Lucasfilm's toes do you see any problems with that? Just curious...
  21. Hey there, First time poster here, but long-time intermittent lurker. Long story short is I've been working on an rpg for our Astral Empires setting ( http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=astral+empires&x=0&y=0&quicksearch=1&search_filter=&filters=&search_free=&search_in_description=1&search_in_author=1&search_in_artist=1 ) for that happy day when Open D6 was going to be a reality. I'm pretty excited about the development as I've been a D6 fan since middle school because of the Star Wars, etc. games of my youth (like so many others here). My hope is that Astral Empires can be a nifty setting for Open D6 and in my wildest aspirations I dream that it would bring back some of those feelings that WEG Star Wars did back in the day (of course, without the Lucasfilm IP). Well, it's something to shoot for, at least. Among other things, there are multiple races and character types, lots of cool technology and starships, and I hope to include an integral spaceship combat system based on our other games along with multiple fleshed-out subsettings built on some of the popular tropes and idioms of this, my favorite genre. So.... Keep an eye out for mysterious Voidrangers, multi-species Xenolegions, Cybrid Warriors of the dreaded Gladitorial Axis, Mekstryder Jockeys, time-displaced Alpha Marines, reptilian Sarlicons, crystaloid Zakaji, and a lot of other strange futuristic beings that will (hopefully) soon be invading your game table or at least your D6 reading experience.
