I was a kid in the 80's and I collected both DC and Marvel. DC was my overall favorite too, probably because of my earlier childhood watching the SuperFriends cartoon. And the late 80's revamping of the DC continuity following Crisis on Infinite Earths made DC even more supreme, in my book. My favorite artist was and still is George Perez. Wow, it's hard to believe that I stopped collecting comic books over 20 years ago!
For DC, I collected The New Teen Titans, Infinity Inc., the John Byrne (and Jerry Ordway) Superman titles, the Batman titles, The new Flash (Wally West) series, Green Arrow, George Perez's Wonder Woman and a few others. I participated in the fan vote to kill off the Jason Todd Robin character. My most prized comic book is my copy of Wonder Woman #1 (2nd series), signed by George Perez. And I still own a beautiful limited edition full-color poster Perez made for Wonder Woman's Challenge of the Gods storyline, and it is hanging on the wall right beside the computer I am typing this from. It is chock full of Olympian deities and scenes from Wonder Woman's decent into Hades battling numerous slain monsters from Greek mythology.
For Marvel, I mainly collected The Uncanny X-Men, Daredevil, Thor and Marvel Tales featuring reprints of the original 60's Amazing Spider-Man. As a junior high student, my first and only letter I ever wrote to a comic book publisher was printed in an issue of Marvel Tales that I still I own. I went back and got the entire Invaders series from the 70's.
At my collection's peak, I owned about 1200 comic books in 6 boxes, mostly DC superhero books, but I have gotten rid of most of them, whittling my collection down to about 200. They're all bagged and boarded, most stilll in near-mint condition. There are a few valuable ones, but I keep this one box of 200 mostly for nostalgia.
As a child, my favorite DC characters were Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel (Shazam), Batman, and Superman. (And I guess I had a soft place in my heart for Aquaman too.) My favorite Marvel characters were Daredevil, Spider-Man, Thor and the Human Torch.
As a former comic collecting but still nerdy adult, I guess my favorite DC characters would still be the mythology-based heroes Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel. The both derive their powers mostly from pagan gods - how cool is that?! And I always thought that Captain Marvel just had a cooler costume and was a more interesting version of Superman than even Superman himself. And because of the Christopher Nolan Batman films, Batman is still definitely a fave as well. My favorite Marvel characters would also be from quality modern movies, namely Spider-Man, Daredevil and Iron Man.

For me, I was a collector of many odd and unsusual comics. I was a big fan of Batman (but only collected Legends of the Dark Knight and Shadow of the Bat(?) and they were the non-continuity titles), I was also a fan of Wally West as the Flash, and the Spectre from DC's universe. In Marvel I was a fan of the X-Men, Doctor Strange, and Cloak and Dagger for many moons and that was about it of theirs as far as comic books went.
But I was also a fan of the Ultraverse from Malibu and read Firearm, The Strangers, Nightman, and Mantra. I stopped reading them all when Marvel bought Malibu.
Then over at Darkhorse Comics I was an avid reader of Star Wars Classic and Ghost.
Of course my problem was that if it wasn't an iconic hero from the past 40+ years, if I read their comic it was trashed and cancelled.

The first comic book I ever bought was Uncanny X-Men #205. It featured Wolverine, Energizer from Power Pack (Katie Power at the time) vs Lady Deathstrike and some former Hellfire Club Guards turned Cyborgs. I quickly started getting my hands on all the X-Men issues I could and it became my favorite comic book for a long time.
After that I started getting into Spider-Man, Captain America and other Marvel comics with only occassionally going into DC Comics.

Let's see. In no particular order, my 10 favorites are: Green Latern (Hal Jordan), Dr. Strange, Iron Man, Spider Man, Flash, Moon Knight (first and third series), X-men, Batman (post Frank Miller), The Fly (Image Comics), and New Gods. That makes my score: Marvel 5, DC 4, Image 1.

Whill, are you sure you wrote about your comic history, not mine? Some weeks ago my parents moved into a smaller house and I had to pick up the boxes that were safe stacked away on their attic. About 2000 comic books mostly Marvel and DC from the 80s. I have managed to catalogue 2 of the boxes right now which are clustering up my flat now and am astonished what I collected and had forgotten. No real gem in there though all in mint condition. So far the most valuable are Daredevil:Born Again, Miracleman 12 and X-Men 213 (in fact X-Men 205-236) but I am sure there are more gems in other boxes.
I was more a Marvel fan than DC though, my most favourite comic books were X-Men, Dr. Strange and the Sienkewicz Thor stories but also Legion of Superheroes and Green Lantern. My most favourite heroes were Longshot from X-Men and Green Arrow.
With the boxes standing around taking away space (and I am not sure they would survive the cellar so I have them still in my flat) and financial problems, I was thinking about selling them though the market is terrible right now. But I got a new job, my financial situation has improved and now I don't have the time to finish the cataloguing. So I probably will keep them (and maybe read them again - this is a bit like getting back into my youth).

Cool...nice memories flowing on here. The first comic I remember buying was Justice League #3...the Giffen/DeMatteis/Maguire "funny" series that eventually became Justice League International. After that, I was pretty much all-in for DC and developed an attachment to some of the more offbeat characters like Blue Beetle (RIP), Booster Gold, and Guy Gardner. The main comics I collected were JLI, Flash, and Marvel's ALF series (I loved that show). I would also pick up a lot of random DC stuff, like Action, Firestorm, and Suicide Squad. Only dabbled in Marvel. For some reason, I collected the Solo Avengers series (with Hawkeye) for a while, and I really liked Speedball when he came around.
As I've aged, my tastes have become more...I don't know, refined? I loved the big ridiculous crossovers when I was a kid; now I prefer a superhero universe that actually feels like it could be our own world...if that makes sense. Sometimes, it just seems like the human element gets lost when the stories become too big. Perhaps ironically, though, the Green Lantern mythos has become one of my favorite things in comics, to the point that I actually got the GL emblem tattooed on my right arm a few years ago. I've also come to really love Batman, and kind of consider Bats and GL to be the cornerstones of the ideal superhero universe.
And for what it's worth, some of my favorite comic stories ever (not necessarily in order) are: Watchmen (of course), All Star Superman, Superman: Red Son, Astonishing X-Men (first arc, by Joss Whedon), and We3. I also have a real affinity for the Weapon Brown series, which if you're a comics fan, you should really check out (http://www.whatisdeepfried.com/weaponbrown/weaponbrown.html) at some point.
