I got Shatterzone and I have to say it is very cool. I have a lot of reading to do but so far I like what I have read.

I like what I have read and flipped through so far.
There are things that really need to be expanded on, it's like they threw in as many different bits as they could and didnt worry about describing them very well.
But I like what I see so far. I will continue reading and give you an updated report.

Please do :)
We have already talked about the rules, but what about the setting?

It's very much a Kitchen sink kind of setting. It's like every sci-fi aspect the designers want thrown into one game. The problem is many sections of the game only give brief information and are not clear enough.
I can go into further detail if you like

Please do! I agree with you that alot of times it would have been nice to see a bit more detail.
While the universe has room for a wide range of sci fi tropes, I don't see it as a completely generic setting.
* Its not hard science. By this I mean its not the kind of setting where we have to worry too much about laws of physics, gravity and all that. Elements like the Q drive are prime examples of this.
* Its grim and gritty. Most campaigns will deal with lowlife scum or the gory side of military life. Cyberpunk or Starship Troopers.
*There are intelligent aliens. I have considered dropping them as I like settings where aliens don't exist or are some kind of mystery, but this is not the case in this setting. This makes the setting similar to Babylon 5 (though Star Trek or Star Wars are also comparable here).
*Psionics are feared and discriminated against. I am reminded by the Psi Core from Babylon 5 here too, though I am sure this is a common trope in sci fi dealing with psi.
IMO all of these features help giving SZ an identity of its own. We always played it as a cross between Babylon 5 and Aliens.
