This may not be a wholly appropriate place to ask this question, however, I'm at a loss for any true way of finding this information.

I have heard that the last rough copy of the Rogue Squadron Sourcebook was lost on a CD a long time ago. Is there any way we (as in my buddie and I) can get our hands on a copy of that material? I know the data was corrupted, but we both are computer engineers and maybe, just maybe, we could reconstruct the data.

My buddie has been compiling all the Rogue Squadron data into one book that he's painstakingly putting together into a fan made book. It will probably take him the rest of his life!

Not certain if you guys/gals know that Rancor pit has a lot of fan made sourcebooks available off their froums, Wizards made them pull the links to sourcebooks with images in them (or so I am told), however, i could probably find the books and provide links to them if anyone is interested. The stats aren't all correct, but they're damned fine compilations of material for any Star Wars nut!

Anyway, I would probably give up a testicle if I could get my hands on any leads to the Rogue Squadron Source material. Damn... the book even had an ISBN number and I have ordered it from many bookstores over the years hoping (even overseas) that one of these places would miracuously have a copy... Kind of pointless since it never saw print...

He're to maintaining hope and to never giving up looking for the book for the past 11 years.

Thanks,

J

I've heard (and repeated) the story that the book was finished, put on CD, and the data was corrupted. However, from what I understand, it was never a finished book. I've read reports from people who worked at WEG at the time, and the book just wasn't that complete when the information was lost. Right now the only things that really physically remain are some notes that were made by one of the game designers, and a collection of art that was supposed to appear in the book.

The author who had the notes revisited them and was in dismay that he doesn't think that there's really anything much there to work with. It's nothing he can really go back and re-create from. The art appeared on eBay a few years ago and fetched quite a nice price.

A lot of things went wrong when Scott Palter was getting towards the end of things as WEG's Star Wars years. When the company was sold to Eric Gibson there was no word on this holy grail lost book.

It's safe to say that any usable material simply doesn't exist anymore, and even if it did, it would take a lot of time and effort to actually make it into a real book.

Hey, thank you for revisiting this again for me. My buddie and I will continue to work on our version of the book, I just wanted to give it one last desparate attempt to see if we might have the ability to even glimpse the materials that would have gone into the book.

The artwork dosen't really bother me at all. There are enough images floating around on the net that artwork, that is public domain, can be easily be inserted for flair. Its just the "Holy Grail" of even disjointed notes would be priceless to look at.

Thank you, for your understanding and your patience, I appreciate you responding!

Geez, now I wish I had taken down the name of the author who found his notes for his section of the book. Unfortunately, I don't remember who it was.

I know that Michael Stackpole had done a short story for the book, though I wouldn't get your hopes up that he'd let you reprint it on the internet. There are too many intellectual properties in play here. He's got a lot more to risk as a professional author than those of us who do fan books.

I've worked on a lot of fan projects myself, particularly conversion books for the current d20 materials. However, anyone who works on these things has to understand that they do so with the understanding that the images, characters, names, etc. that we use aren't public domain. They're all copyrighted and trademarked by Lucasfilm. They could sue the pants off of all of us if they really so chose. They see it in their best interest not to, so they play nice so long as we play nice.

I wish you all the best in reconstructing your book. I know how much goes into those things. I'd love to see it when its done.

I'll make certain I get you a copy of it when its done then. It will probably be a while since my friend Eric is a stickler for detail. However...

here's part of what he's done already

I have some other various layouts and character backgrounds in the works. One of them consisted of a sourcebook numbering around 200 pages with locales, technology personas of interest and such. Been a while since I revisited it, I lost about 80 pages with a hard disk crash (and that's bad for a guy that's been working on them for 18 years!). Its a hobby.

The above is more my buddy Eric than anyone else. I want to help... but he's got a better eye for detail than I do. My stuff is better generated from raw imagination than from quoting book/cannon sources.

I'll keep you up to date, however, if you do remember anyone or have access to a scan or two of the old material.... <drool> I would love to see it!

Thanks,

Justin

As a friendly suggestion, you may want to look into geting a hold of a copy of Star Wars: X-Wing: Rogue Squadron Handbook (http://www.amazon.com/Star-Handbook-X-Wing-Rogue-Squadron/dp/B0018A8YU4/), by the makers of the the Rogue Squadron comic book. You may be able to get it elsewhere for less than on Amazon, most certainly less than a testicle.

Good luck on your project. I'm looking forward to seeing the final product. :)

I checked with him, he has all the Omnibuses and just about every other scrap of info on Rogue Squadron that is available. But Thanks anyway!

I know some of the pilots above are actually from Wraith Squadron, but I thought they might come in handy. Plus, Wraith Squadron is just so much cooler than Rogue Squadron....
